Mark Menendez is considered a specialist with a jerkbait. He views drawing long-range strikes from bass with a hard-bodied jerkbait as a challenge.<\/p>\n

What’s not nearly as well-known is his affinity for soft plastic jerkbaits, erratic lures like Strike King’s 3X Zulu and ZT00. It’s that affection for soft jerks that led him to develop a double jerkbait rig that pays big dividends in certain situations.<\/p>\n

“My friends and I call it the donkey rig,” Menendez said. “It’s absolutely one of the funniest ways of fishing. If you’re not catching any, you’ll amuse yourself the whole day because the action is so erratic and so different.<\/p>\n

“A double jerkbait rig does two things. It provides a competition look, which bass hate \u2014 when they see something trying to get something else. They want to be the bully on the block and take it away. And it pulls a lot of fish from depths.<\/p>\n

\"\u30c9\u30f3\u30ad\u30fc\u30ea\u30b0=\u30c0\u30d6\u30eb\u30d5\u30eb\u30fc\u30af\u30ea\u30b0“I like to fish it when I’m around schooling bass. If you throw a rattling-type bait like a Diamond Shad or a big crankbait or spinnerbait through schooling fish, it will have a tendency to spook them sometimes, particularly Florida bass, which are so darn finicky. But a double soft-jerkbait rig will get them fired up.”<\/p>\n

The double rig consists of two short leaders, two 4\/0 hooks and a pair of small swivels. One swivel is tied to the end of the main line and an 8-inch leader that ends with a hook; a 12-inch leader is tied to a swivel that moves freely up and down the main line. The big hooks provide enough weight to improve the rig’s descent and castability. And the different leader lengths enhance the rig’s action while limiting line twist.<\/p>\n

“I always like to use little bright silver swivels so it looks like tiny minnows being chased by slightly bigger minnows, which creates the competition look,” he explained. “I mix the baits up. Sometimes I use a pair of ZT00s and sometimes I’ll have a Zulu and a ZT00. A Zulu floats, while a ZT00 will actually sink, so then you get a parallel look. Instead of having it on the same depth level, you can actually have one below the other with the Zulu on one and the ZT00 on the other.”
\nThe double fluke rig aka donkey rig is one of the finest presentations on lakes where bass feed heavily on suspended baitfish. It originated on the blueback herring lakes of the south but its use has spread throughout the country (where legal). We stuck a camera below the water to gain a better understanding of why this double fluke setup dominates where bass prey heavily on suspended baitfish.<\/p>\n

The aha moment comes quickly. Few lures can beat the realism of a soft plastic jerkbait on the move, in this case, the legendary Zoom Super Fluke. Similar to an Alabama Rig, the darting erratic nature of two tethered flukes gives the appearance of a baitfish school – a target worthy of the chase. The Texas-rigged soft jerkbaits excel at covering water quickly, be it open water or grass, while the darting baitfish action is a proven trigger for largemouth, smallmouth and spotted bass.<\/p>\n

The donkey rig aka double fluke rig pairs two fluke-style soft plastic jerkbaits on a single mainline to create the illusion of a baitfish school (as seen in this underwater video). Here’s how to rig it using basic terminal tackle and a little knowledge.<\/p>\n

Mark Rose shares his preferred terminal tackle for rigging the system. Key to the setup is making leaders of two different lengths with Mark opting for one around 20-inches and the other around 14-inches — this nearly eliminates fouling. Slide whichever leader you want up the mainline, then tie on the second leader, which serves as a stopper for the first. Lastly, Mark Texas rigs soft jerkbaits and ops to leave the hooks pushed through and exposed when fishing clean areas.<\/p>\n
